Deck Installation Types We Handle in Harlan, IA

Deck Bros handles deck installation in Harlan and Shelby County start to finish. Composite, cedar, or pressure-treated. Permits filed, inspections coordinated, warranty paperwork in your hands on the last day.

Most Harlan projects fall into three categories.

Replacements on mid-century homes

A big share of Harlan’s housing stock was built between 1950 and 1990. Those original wood decks are 25+ years old, often rotted at the ledger, and past safe service life. We demolish, upgrade the footings to current Iowa code, and install a new deck in composite or cedar.

First-deck installs on newer builds

Homes added in Harlan’s north and west subdivisions over the last decade often came without a deck or with a minimal builder version. We handle the full install from footings through finish.

Historic home additions

Homes near downtown and the courthouse district sometimes date back to the early 1900s. Ledger attachment needs extra structural inspection on these. Freestanding designs are common where the rim joist is unknown or compromised.

Harlan Permits and Shelby County Code

Permit jurisdiction depends on your address. Inside city limits, it’s the Harlan City Hall Building Department. Outside city limits in unincorporated Shelby County, it’s the Shelby County Planning and Zoning office at the Courthouse, 612 Court Street, Harlan, IA 51537, 712-755-3831.

Both jurisdictions adopt the Iowa Residential Code.

Specs we meet or exceed on every install:

concrete footings
42-inch minimum depth, typically poured deeper (Iowa frost line averages 58 inches)
secure joist connection to ledger board under composite decking
flashing behind the ledger, lag bolts at code spacing, lateral tension tie connectors
PT wood decking
36 inches minimum height, 42 inches on decks over 30 inches off grade, baluster spacing under 4 inches
decking3
three stages (footing, framing, final)
We file the permit in our name and coordinate every inspection.

Found Deck Bros on Facebook & gave them a call, the owner Luan was very pleasant & came out, gave me a quote on the spot, I HIGHLY Recommended this company for your decking needs, Luan’s employees were so much fun to be around, they didn’t have any issues with the dogs being around checking on their work,

They were all very professional & worked hard, arriving early & getting to work, we even did some salsa dancing to the music, they went Above & Beyond & no request was an issue.

Thank You, Luan, & the main guys that were there every day, Christian, Carlos & Leo.

Our deck was the original deck built on the house and 20+years old and in bad shape, along with some original hardscaping below the deck.

I did some online research and seen a lot of great things about Deck Bros. We called Luan for a quote and we were very pleased with his honesty, knowledge, and down to earth attitude. We received the detailed quote the day he visited and liked the price and services offered. We were quoted a start date at the end of March.

As I type this, the entire project has been completed, a full week before it was originally scheduled to be started. The team had great communication, was very friendly and did a great job. We will absolutely recommend Deck Bros to anyone and will continue to utilize them for years to come.

Harlan Install FAQs

Yes. Harlan is part of our active Iowa service area. We schedule Harlan consultations and builds regularly. The drive from our Omaha shop is about an hour each way, which we factor into routing but not into your pricing.
Pricing matches what we quote in the rest of our service area. A 12×12 cedar deck runs around $14,000. A 20×12 composite deck with aluminum rail, fascia wrap, and stairs is around $27,000. Multi-feature builds with pergolas or elevated multi-stair layouts run $40,000 to $45,000 and up.
We do. Harlan city permits go through the Harlan Building Department at City Hall. Unincorporated Shelby County permits go through the Planning and Zoning office at the Shelby County Courthouse. We file whichever applies to your address.
Yes. Older homes around the courthouse district and original townsite need extra care on ledger attachment because the rim joist may be compromised. We inspect your structure before quoting. On homes where attachment would be risky, we quote a freestanding deck on independent posts.
Iowa spring and fall can throw weather at any build. We plan schedules with weather buffer days and coordinate with you by text if we need to pause and resume. We don’t charge extra time for weather delays on our side.
Yes. Aluminum or cedar pergolas tied into the deck frame are a common Harlan add-on. Fully covered sections are handled through our covered deck service.
Yes, and many Harlan installs are exactly that. We demolish the existing deck, upgrade the footings and ledger connection to current code, and install composite decking over a new framing system. Lifespan resets to 25 to 30 years depending on the composite line.
Spring slots usually fill 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Summer, fall, and winter availability runs 3 to 4 weeks out. Call (402) 369-5724 for current scheduling.
A 5-year workmanship warranty covering framing, fasteners, and installation. Your decking material brings its own manufacturer warranty: 30 years for TimberTech AZEK, 25 to 50 years for Trex depending on product line, 40 years for Fiberon Sanctuary. Aluminum railing from Westbury carries limited lifetime coverage. All warranties transfer if you sell the house.

(takes 1-2 min)

Harlan is a Shelby County city of about 4,900 residents on the West Nishnabotna River, 41 miles northeast of Omaha and 38 miles northeast of Council Bluffs. It has been the Shelby County seat since 1859 and is anchored by the historic Shelby County Courthouse at 612 Court Street. Harlan has a more established housing stock than most of the newer towns in our service area, which is why replacement installs on aging wood decks make up a meaningful share of the work we do here.
