Part One: Initial Consultation
Dennis and Terry had a deck problem they couldn’t ignore any longer.
The structure had been deteriorating for years, and by the time they reached out to Deck Bros, it had become a genuine safety hazard.
What they wanted was simple: tear out the old deck and replace it with something built right. A quality cedar deck, proper railings, clean lattice skirting around the base, and a louvered pergola to give them shade on one side. They also wanted stairs that actually lined up with their sliding door and didn’t eat up the whole patio.
Soon, we met with Dennis and Terry to walk their backyard and see exactly what they were working with.
Here's what the on-site visit revealed...

Severely weathered boards
The deck boards had been failing for years and were covered in peeling, faded paint.

No perimeter railings
The platform had no guardrails or safety barriers of any kind along the edges.

Rotting wraparound stairs
The old stairs looped around the entire front of the deck and had rotting wood treads.

Broken skirting
The lattice underneath was cracked, sagging, and propped up loosely by mismatched bricks.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
Before construction began, we developed plans through careful engineering to address the issues identified during the on-site visit. We also coordinated directly with municipal planners to submit and have permits approved.
Framing plan
The house structure naturally supported only 16 feet of deck width. Rather than add costly new ground footings on both sides, the framing was designed to extend beyond the house on each side and carry its own weight.
Footing plan
The deck was anchored with a pinned foundation system for a stronger, cleaner hold. When the city inspector asked for one more anchor point mid-build, we added it on the spot and passed without a delay.
Part Three: The Time Schedule
This project went from contract to completion in under two months. See the full timeline.
July 29
We issued the formal proposal to homeowners Dennis and Terry.
August 6
The homeowners signed and approved the agreement. Project officially locked in.
August 20
Pre-construction meeting held to finalize layout changes, including stair width and alignment.
August 29
The aluminum louvered pergola was ordered. The homeowners chose to purchase it separately.
September
Construction began on September 8. The old deck was demolished and removed, and structural framing started the same day. Throughout the month, we passed inspections, poured the concrete pad, framed the stairs, and laid the deck surface. Then, we assembled the louvered pergola and mounted it above the deck and completed all the finishing touches, from the soffit to the railings.
October 6
The completed project passed final municipal inspection, and we did a final walkthrough with Dennis before receiving the final payment.

Grade 1 Premium Cedar Decking
Cedar was the right call for Dennis and Terry’s deck. Grade 1 Premium Cedar is the top classification for outdoor decking cedar, meaning fewer knots, tighter grain, and more consistent density throughout each board. It takes stain and finish evenly, holds up well through Nebraska winters, and has a clean, warm look.

Cedar Railings with Black Metal Spindles
The railings are built from the same Grade 1 Premium Cedar as the deck surface. The black metal spindles run between the top and bottom rails, giving the railing a clean, modern contrast against the natural wood. The flat-top drink rail along the top cap gives Dennis and Terry a place to set a glass without needing a separate table.

Grey Aluminum Louvered Pergola
Dennis and Terry wanted to source the pergola themselves: a 10’x10′ grey aluminum louvered model from Wayfair. Once it arrived, Deck Bros handled the full assembly and installation. That included cutting the posts to a custom length on-site, because the standard height would’ve conflicted with the house soffit. The pergola now sits flush and level under the roofline, with the louvered panels giving them manual control over shade and airflow.
