Part One: Initial Consultation

When homeowners Neil and Del reached out to Deck Bros, their daughter’s wedding was coming up.

Their existing deck was the last thing they wanted the guests to see. It was rotting from the inside out: moldy framing, peeling stain, and weeds growing through the stairs.

They wanted it torn down and replaced with a beautiful and functional outdoor space, ready to entertain the arriving family.

That’s why Neil and Del chose low-maintenance composite decking with a roof cover that’d be ready for any occasion, no matter the weather.

Here's what the on-site consultation revealed...

severe framing rot

The structure was entirely compromised. The framing was loaded with mold and mildew.

peeling and staining

Every surface had paint and sealant that was chipping, fading, and peeling off.

unusable stairs

The old staircase was a serious safety hazard. It was warped and weeds had grown through the steps.

zero weather protection

No roof meant the entire deck sat exposed to direct sun and heavy rain year-round.

Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting

Before a single board was cut, every problem on the old deck was solved on paper first, including the open-view roof Neil and Del requested.

Framing plan

This is what keeps a deck from rotting out in 5 years. We built the frame with sealed, moisture-protected joists and secured it to the house with flashing, so water has nowhere to sneak in.

Footing plan

Instead of jackhammering up the yard to pour large concrete footings, we used a pin-driven foundation system that anchors the posts solidly. Less digging, no torn-up lawn.

Side Elevation Plan

Neil wanted the view from the deck left completely open. So, the roof was engineered to carry its entire load through just two corner posts, with a heavy-duty beam spanning the middle.

Part Three: The Time Schedule

This project moved from proposal to final walkthrough in about two and a half months, and the construction alone took exactly 2 weeks.

Aug 14 – Aug 21

Deck Bros issued the formal construction proposal. Neil and Del reviewed and signed within a week.

Sep 8 – Sep 30

Pre-construction walkthrough locked in the two-post roof layout and concrete landing pad. 811 utility locating cleared the site for digging.

Oct 8 – Oct 9

Old deck demolished, Diamond Piers set, and the majority of framing completed. The concrete landing pad was poured the following morning, and composite decking installation began.

Oct 10 – Oct 14

Roof pitch adjusted on-site to a city-approved 0.5 slope, raising headroom from 6’4″ to 6’11”. Materials shifted from shingles to rolled roofing. Pine car siding ceiling upgrade completed. Framing inspection officially passed.

Oct 15 – Oct 21

Construction intentionally paused during the family wedding weekend. Gutters installed by subcontractor the following week, completing the physical build.

Oct 24 – Oct 27

Final inspection scheduled and completed. On October 27, we had the final walkthrough with Neil, who was very happy with the deck and left a 5-star review.

This project included:

sloped deck cover

Sloped Lean-To Roof Cover With Pine Car Siding Ceiling

The roof cover is what transforms this from a deck into an outdoor room. The 16×12 lean-to structure was carefully engineered so that the entire load is carried by just two corner posts, leaving the view open. The ceiling was upgraded from standard soffit to pine car siding, giving the underside of the cover a warm, finished look.
