Elevated Cedar Deck Rebuild

Location: North Linn Street, Glenwood, IA

Price: $30,679

a newly constructed two level cedar deck attached to a house

Part One: Initial Consultation

When we first inspected Grant and Deya’s deck on a cold January morning, the problems were obvious.

The white paint was peeling off in sheets, and the roof section had rafters poking through the home’s fascia.

But the real challenge wasn’t just cosmetic. The property had significant slope issues, which meant we’d need to get creative with the foundation.

We were straight with the homeowners about what we knew and what we didn’t. Until we tore into the roof, we wouldn’t know exactly what kind of siding repairs, waterproofing, and fascia work we’d need to tackle.

Here's what we found during our on-site consultation...

Paint failure issue
It’s peeling off in thick sheets, exposing bare, weathered wood underneath.
Railing attachment point issue
The wood at this critical junction point is deteriorating, which is a major safety issue.
Sloped concrete issue

The concrete pad is at different levels. Not a good foundation.

Roof connection to house issue

The rafters protruding through the fascia pose a significant risk of water damage.

Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting

Grant and Deya had a clear vision: a 16×16 cedar deck with a 4×4 landing, 15 stairs, and clean black metal spindles.

We set out to make their vision a reality, starting with a detailed plan.

Framing plan

This is the skeleton of the deck. The 2×10 joists run at 16-inch intervals for maximum strength, with doubled-up 2×12 beams carrying the load.

Footing plan

See the 16×16 deck layout with the 4×4 landing where the stairs start. Proper footing ensures the deck won’t shift, settle, or sag over time.

Front Elevation Plan

The three 6×6 posts rising from their foundation piers support the main deck and offers safe usable space underneath.

Side elevation Plan

The 6×6 posts are different heights to accommodate the sloped terrain, and the DP50 piers ensure rock-solid foundation despite uneven ground.

Part Three: The Time Schedule

From tear-out to final walkthrough, this deck replacement took just four days to complete.

Our crew stayed on top of quality control, catching and fixing minor issues on the spot before they became problems.

January 27

The crew arrived teared out the old deck. By end of day, demo was complete and they’d already started framing. The main 2×12 beam was up and looking solid.

January 28

We installed the footings and started laying decking boards. Everything was moving fast. We also sent over a change order proposal for fixing the gutters and fascia while we were at it.

January 29

Time for the finishing touches. We caught a few small issues during the walkthrough (some railing pieces that needed swapping and a miscut board) but we had plenty of extra material on site to make it right.

January 30

The deck build was done, and we scheduled our gutter specialist to come out on Sunday to handle that part of the work. At our final walkthrough, Grant was thrilled by how the project turned out.

Elevated Cedar Deck Rebuild

This project included:

grade 1 cedar

Top grade 1 cedar Decking

Grade 1 cedar is the cleanest, most consistent wood material you can get. Fewer knots, minimal imperfections, and boards that lay flat and true. It costs more upfront than lower grades or treated pine. But when you factor in the minimal maintenance and the fact that cedar ages beautifully for decades to come, it’s the smarter investment.

black metal spindles

Cedar Railing with black Metal spindles

The cedar top and bottom rails match the decking and give you that warm, natural wood feel where hands actually touch the railing. The homeowner’s choice of metal spindles not only looks sophisticated but is also engineered to withstand the elements. No more rot, warp, or crack.
